Question 2.27

If the solubility product of CuS is 6×106, calculate the maximum molarity of CuS in aqueous solution.

Open in App
Solution

Chemical equation for the dissociation of CuS in aqueous solution is as follows:

Molar concentration CuS(s)[S]H2OCu2+(aq)[S]+S2(aq)[S]

Solubility product, Ksp=[Cu2+][S2]

=S×S=S2

6×1016=S2

S=6×1016or(6×1016)12

=24.5×108 mol L1

2.45×108M
