The substance that is present in greater amounts is called the solvent whereas the substance which dissolves in the solvent and is present in lesser amounts is called the solute.
For example, salt (solute) is in solid form which dissolves completely in water (solvent) to form a salt solution.
Hence, salt is a solid that dissolves in water.
