Solution

The three states of matter are classified based on the difference in the energy of their particles.

  • The space or gap between the particles or molecules of matter i.e. solids, liquids, and gases is called interparticle space or intermolecular space.
  • In solids the intermolecular space is negligible, in liquids the intermolecular space is more than that of the solid and in gases, the intermolecular space is large in gases.
  • Particles of every substance possess some amount of energy due to which they move around.
  • If the energy of particles is more, then the movement of particles will also be more which increases the motion of particles.
  • Hence, gases have the highest energy of the particles, liquids have energy less than gas and solids have least energy.

Therefore, the three states of matter are classified based on the difference in the energy of their particles.
