The following experiment is to be conducted:
Take MgO and dissolve it in water.
If you dip a red litmus paper in it than it will turn blue.This shows that it is alkaline or basic in nature.
Also, another way to prove this is if an acid is reacted with it you will get salt and water. This shows basic nature of MgO.
