A group of 8 elements namely sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, Chlorine and argon belongs to the third period of periodic table are called as third row elements. The properties of each element are characteristics of the group to which they belong. Each one of these elements can, therefore, be considered as the representative of the whole group to which they belongs. Hence the third row elements are known as typical or representative elements.
