Let present age of father and son be x and y respectively

then 3 years ago sum of then age is 40.

$\Rightarrow (x-3)+(y-3)=40$

$x+y=46\Rightarrow y=46-x...\left(1\right)$

After 2 years ; sum of age of father and son is

Let $t=(x+2)+(y+2)$

$t=(x+2+46-x+2)$ from (1)

$=46+4$

$t=50$

So sum of their ages after 2 years = 50.
