Question

33. You have given a solution of substance X. How will you test whether it is saturated or unsaturated? When a hot saturated solution of a substance is allowed to cool, then what will you get?

Solution

Part 1: Saturated Solution and Unsaturated Solution:

  • A solution in which the solute dissolves until it can no longer dissolve and the undissolved substances settle to the bottom is called a Saturated Solution.
  • A solution that entirely dissolves the solute, leaving no substances behind is called Unsaturated Solution.it has less solute than the saturated solution.

Part 2: Identifying the solution of substance X:

To determine whether a substance X solution is saturated or unsaturated, increase the amount of X in the solution.

It is a saturated solution if it remains undissolved.

It's an unsaturated solution if it dissolves.

Part 3: When the hot saturated solution is allowed to cool:

  • When a saturated solution is cooled below the temperature at which it was prepared, the solute's solubility decreases.
  • Because of the decrease in solubility, some dissolved solutes will precipitate as solid crystals.
  • When a hot saturated solution of X is cooled, more and more X (which is the solute here) precipitates out and settles to the bottom.
  • The X crystals will return in this manner.
