Question

39 The gas Y is colorless and odorless having a slightly sour taste and is a minor component of air. It is moderately soluble in water. The gas is neither burns not supports burning. It rather extinguishes a burning fire. If there were no gas Y in air, there would be no animals or plants on the earth.

(a) Identify gas Y.

(b) In what percentage, gas Y present in the air?

(c) State two ways in which gas Y is added to the air.

(d) Gas Y is necessary for the existence of life. Why?

Solution

(a) Carbon dioxide does not support combustion.

  • Combustion occurs in the presence of oxygen.
  • When Carbon dioxide is sprayed on a burning object, it stops the supply of oxygen.
  • Carbon dioxide is very cold as it comes out of the extinguisher, so it cools the fuel also.
  • Thus, gas Y is Carbon dioxide (CO2)

(b) Air is composed of a mixture of gases such as 78% Nitrogen, 20.95 % Oxygen, 0.03% Carbon dioxide, and other gases such as hydrogen, helium, Argon, etc.

Thus, 0.03% of Carbon dioxide is present in the air.

(c) (i) Respiration of living organisms.

(ii) Burning of fossil fuels by human beings.

(d) All the food which animals eat is made from the carbon dioxide present in the air.

Plants take up Carbon dioxide from the air which is released by the living organisms and react with water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll to produce glucose and Oxygen. Through this process, plants prepare their food known as the photosynthesis process. These plants are eaten by the animals to stay alive.
