Question

4.35 g of pyrolusite (MnO2 mineral) is digested with conc. HCl and KI added. Mixture required 5 mL of 1 M Na2S2O3 solution for complete reaction of KI3 formed. What is the % of pure MnO2 in pyrolusite? (Mn=55)

Solution

Let the percentage of pure MnO2 in pyrolusite be X.
The chemicalreactions are as given below.
2KI+4HCl+MnO22KCl+MnCl2+2H2O+I2
KI+I2KI3
2Na2S2O3+I2Na2S4O6+2NaI
Thus, it can be seen that 1 mole of MnO2 reacts with 2 moles of Na2S2O3
the number of moles of Na2S2O3 present is 1mol/L×0.005L=0.005moles

hence, the number of moles of MnO2 present is 0.005moles2=0.0025moles

This corresponds to 0.0025moles×87g/mol=0.2175g

Hence, the percentage purity of MnO2 is 0.21754.35×100=5%
