Solution

Definition of percentage composition of the compound

The ratio of the amount of each element to the total amount of individual elements present in the compound is multiplied by 100. Here, the quantity is measured in terms of grams of the elements present

We are given:

Mass of sample = 4.9 g

Mass of hydrogen = 0.1 g

Mass of sulfur = 1.6 g

Mass of oxygen = (4.9 - (0.1 + 1.6)) = 3.2 g

To calculate the mass percentage of calcium ions in milk, we use the equation:

Masspercentofelement=massofelementmassofsample×100…………………(1)

  • For hydrogen:

Putting values in equation 1, we get:

Masspercentofhydrogen=0.1g4.9g×100=2.04%

  • For oxygen:

Putting values in equation 1, we get:

Masspercentofhydrogen=3.2g4.9g×100=65.31%

  • For sulfur:

Putting values in equation 1, we get:

Masspercentofhydrogen=1.6g4.9g×100=32.65%

The mass percentage of hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen are 2.04 %, 32.65 % and 65.31 %
