Question

4 mol of a mixture containing one mol each of LiNO3, MgNO3 NaNO3,Ca(NO3)2 is decomposed on strong heating. The total number of moles of NO2 (g) evolved is: (assuming complete decomposition of all the salts)

Solution

2LiNO3Li2O+2NO2+12O2
1 mol of LiNO3 will produce 1 mole of NO2

2Mg(NO3)22MgO+4NO2+O2
1 mol of Mg (NO3)2 will produce 2 moles of NO2

2Ca(NO3)22CaO+4NO2+O2
So, 1 mole of Ca(NO3)2 will produce 2 moles of NO2

2NaNO32NaNO2+O2

Hence, total number of moles of NO2 produced = 1+2+2 = 5
