40 g water at 60 ℃ is poured into a vessel containing 50 g of water at 20 ℃. The final temperature of mixture is 30℃. Calculate the specific heat capacity of the vessel which weighs 200 g. Take specific heat of water 4.2Jg1K1.

Write the given quantities-

sw1=4.2Jg1K1

mw1 = 40 g, Tw1 = 60

mw2=50g,Tw1 = 20

mv = 200 g, [1 mark]

ms ×ss (T_1- T_f) = mw ×sw (T_f - T_2) \) + M x s x (T_f - T_2)\)

  • 40 x 4.2 x (60 - 30) = 50 x 4.2 x (30 - 20) + 200 s (30 - 20) [2 mark]

  • On solving we get, s = 1.47 Jg1K1
