Question

400 cm3 of a gas are compressed to half of its volume by applying a pressure of 0.5 atm.During the process 6.5 J of heat flows out to the surroundings. Calculate ∆E of the system.

Solution

from 1st law of thermodynamics deltaE=deltaQ-deltaW,
we can calculate workdone as W=P*V
W=50662.5*(200/1000000)=10.1325 J
deltaE=6.5-10.132=-3.6325
