42. What is the difference between sublimation and deposition?

Open in App
Solution

The difference between sublimation and deposition is as follows:

SublimationDeposition:
  • The conversion of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without going through the liquid phase is known as sublimation.
  • Examples: Dry ice, camphor, ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) these are the substances which directly get converted into gas on increasing temperature
  • The conversion of gases directly into solids without going through the liquid phase on decreasing temperature is called deposition. It is just the reverse to sublimation.
  • Example: The example of deposition is frost i.e water vapour from humid air or air containing water vapour on to a solid surface.
