47Akshay went on an adventurous trip with his friends. He went climbing sky diving and underground water diving. He observed that while all the activities were pleasant during water diving, he and his friends felt nauseous and had breathing difficulties. He was aware of the same thing happening to his friends a few years back as he was mountain climbing.
(a) Can you suggest a reason behind all the symptoms faced by Akshaya and his friends.

  • Akshay and his friends went deep-sea diving.
  • As we know inside the sea oxygen level is very low.
  • Oxygen gets into the seawater in two ways: Through photosynthesis, which takes place only near the top where light penetrates, or through the mixing of air and water at the surface by wind and waves. Whereas Deep seas hold less oxygen than surface waters because they are in contact with air for centuries.
  • That's why dissolved oxygen in water is used by fishes to breathe.
  • So, lack of oxygen causes breathing problems.
