Question

48. Explain the various terms related to the interconversion of states of matter by changing temperature.

Solution

Part 1: Interconversion of state:

  • Conversion of one state of matter to another on changing pressure or temperature is called interconversion of state.
  • On changing temperature, particles of matter gain energy or release energy and they start moving apart. Thus states of matter interconvert into each other.

Part 2: Effect of temperature on states of matter :

  • By increasing the temperature of a solid substance, particles start to move apart and change to liquid form. If we further increase the temperature of a liquid, the particles gain energy and get converted into gas. For example, the conversion of ice into water and again water into vapor.
  • By decreasing the temperature of the gas, particles start to move close and convert to a liquid state. if we further decrease the temperature of the liquid, it releases energy and gets converted into solid. For example, conversion of water vapour into the water and again water into ice,
