5(b). State main postulates of the kinetic theory of matter.
The following are the main postulates of the kinetic theory of matter:
1. Molecules are in a state of continuous motion and do not stop for any length of time. It is on account of this eternal continuous motion, that molecules possess kinetic energy.
2. Molecules are in a state of random motion and have kinetic energy, which increases with temperature and decreases with temperature.
3. Molecules are always attracted to each other. The force of cohesion attracts molecules of identical sorts, while the force of adhesion attracts molecules of dissimilar kinds.
4. The empty space between the molecules is called intermolecular space.
5. The forces of attraction between the molecules (cohesive force or adhesive force) are called intermolecular forces of attraction.
6. The intermolecular force of attraction increases if the intermolecular space between the molecules decreases and vice versa.
