5 pens and 6 pencils together cost 9 rs and 3 pen & 2 pencils cost 5 rs . Find the cost of 1 pen & 1 pencil .

Dear Student,

Let cost of pen be x
And cost of pencil be y

From the question,

5x + 6y = 9 -----(1)
3x + 2y = 5 -------(2)

Multiplying equation (1) by 1 and equation (2) by 3, we get

5x + 6y = 9 ---------(3)
9x + 6y = 15 ---------(4)

On subtracting (3) from (4), we get
=> 4x = 6
=> x = 3/2 = 1.5

Putting the value of x in equation (1), we get
5(1.5) + 6y = 9
=> 7.5 + 6y = 9
=> 6y = 1.5
=> y = 0.25


Hence the cost of one pen is ₹1.5 and cost of one pencil is ₹ 0.25
