Question

50 g of sample of Ca(OH)2 is dissolved in 50 ml of 0.5 N HCl solution. The excess HCl was titrated with 0.25 N NaOH solution. The volume of NaOH used was 20 ml. What is % purity of Ca(OH)2 in the sample?

Solution

Ca(OH)2+2HClCaCl2+2H2O and NaOH+HClNaCl+H2O
meqv. of HCl in 50 ml of 0.5 N HCl solution= 25 meqv.
meqv. of NaOH in 20 ml of 0.25 N NaOH solution= 5.0 meqv.
So, meqv. of HCl used to react Ca(OH)2=255=20 meqv.
So. meqv. of Ca(OH)2=20 meqv
So, mmol. of Ca(OH)2=202=10 mmol
So, mass of Ca(OH)2 in sample =10×74 mg=740 mg
So, % purity of Ca(OH)2 in sample =0.74050×100=1.48%
