Question

50 mL of a solution containing 1 g each of Na2CO3, NaHCO3 and NaOH was titrated with 1 N HCl. The titre readings (in mL), if only methyl orange is used as an indicator from the beginning, will be (20+x). Find the value of x (as nearest integer).

Solution

The end point using methyl orange when 1 end point using phenolphthalein has already been detected, consumes half Meq. of Na2CO3 and complete NaHCO3.
12 Meq. of Na2CO3 +Meq. of NaHCO3= Meq. of HCl
12×153×1000+184×1000=1×V3
V3=21.3mL
So, nearest integer is 21.
