Question

50 mL of a solution containing 1 g each of Na2CO3, NaHCO3 and NaOH was titrated with 1N HCl. The titre readings (in ml), if only methyl orange is used as an indicator from the beginning, will be (50+x). Find the value of x (as nearest integer).

Solution

The end point using methyl orange from the beginning uses all the equivalents of bases taken.
Meq. of NaOH + Meq. of Na2CO3 + Meq. of NaHCO3 = Meq. of HCl
140×1000+153×1000+184×1000=1×V2
V2=55.8 mL
So, nearest integer is 56=50+6.

So, the value of x is 6
