Solution

Number of cars allowed in 1 trial
= 4

Number of people in 1 car
= 2

Total number of people that can go in 1 trial
= 4 × 2
= 8

Number of trial can be obtained by dividing 51 by 8.

Lets apply repeated subtraction

51 - 8 = 43
43 - 8 = 35
35 - 8 = 27
27 - 8 = 19
19 - 8 = 11
11 - 8 = 3

8 cannot be further subtracted from 3.
So, in 6 trials 48 friends are able to ride. 3 are still left so 1 more trial will be required.

So, total number of trials
= 6 + 1
= 7
