Part 1: Acid rain:

The gases like Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and Sulphur dioxide (SO2) that are released from factories, burning of fossil fuels, etc. dissolve in rainwater and form corresponding acids. This rain when reaches in earth's surface is called acid rain.

Part 2: Effects of acid rain:

The effects of acid rain are:

  • When acid rain reaches the land, it reduces the fertility of the soil.
  • It damages the crops.
  • When acid rain is mixed with water bodies like rivers, lakes, etc., these water bodies get polluted and harm aquatic animals and plants.
  • It corrodes the monuments or buildings. The yellow color of the Taj Mahal is due to acid rain.
  • SO2 present in acid rain causes various health problems like asthma, bronchitis, etc.
