Solvents other than water are:

  1. Ethanol(C2H5OH): It is less toxic as compared to other alcohols. It is used as a solvent in medical drugs, perfumes, and vegetable essences such as vanilla.
  2. Benzene(C6H6): It is used as an industrial solvent in paints, varnishes, gasoline, etc.
  3. Carbon tetrachloride(CCl4): It is used to dissolve fats, oils, and iodine also.
  4. Turpentine: It is a solvent for oil, paints, and varnishes. It can be used to remove tar and grease spots. This is a good solvent for phosphorus and sulphur.
  5. Acetone(CH3COCH3): It is used as a solvent to clean paint, and ink spots. Acetylene is dissolved in acetone to store and transport safely. It is also used as a nail polish remover and super glue remover. This is a solvent for plastic also.
