Question

60MJ energy is produced on combustion of 2kg of coal. Find how much energy is produced on burning 0.5kg of coal. Also, find the calorific value of coal.

Open in App
Solution

STEP 1: Given data

Mass of coal, m=2kg

The energy produced by burning coal, E=60MJ

Step 2: Calculate the energy produced by a given mass of coal

It is given that, Energy produced by 2kg of coal =60MJ then,

The energy produced by 0.5kg of coal =60×0.52=15MJ

STEP 3: Calculate the calorific value of coal

Mass of coal, m=2kg

The energy produced by burning coal, E=60MJ

The calorific value of coal,

c=Emc=602c=30MJkg-1

Hence, the energy produced by burning 0.5kg of coal is 15MJ and the calorific value of coal is 30MJkg-1.
