Mercury is a d-block element represented by the symbol Hg (atomic number - 80).

Properties of mercury:

  • Mercury is a silvery-white liquid metal at room temperature
  • Mercury is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
  • The melting point of mercury is -39°C. If the temperature is above melting point then mercury remains liquid and if it is below melting point then mercury remains solid.
  • The boiling point of mercury is 357°C.
  • Mercury has the unique property of dissolving almost all metals except iron. For example - It forms an amalgam with gold.
