Air pollution: It refers to any physical, chemical or biological alteration in the air. It is the contamination of air by some harmful gases, dust and smoke that tends to affect plants, humans, and animals.

Human activities that lead to air pollution are:

  • Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Carbon monoxide (CO) gas, and fly ash are produced from the thermal power plant.
  • Ammonia gas is liberated from fertilizer factories and cold storage.
  • Fine and bulky solid particles are produced in cement and asbestos factories.
  • Dust and sand in the region of coal mines.
  • Emission of radioactive rays due to accidents in a nuclear reaction, nuclear power plants, etc.
  • CO, SO2, and oxides of nitrogen issuing from motor vehicles.
  • CO, NO2, SO2, and other such gaseous substances evolved from petroleum refineries.
