Definition of Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen. For example - methane (CH4). Two types of hydrocarbons are present

  • Unsaturated Hydrocarbons - Hydrocarbons have a double bond between them. For example - ethylene (CH2=CH2)
  • Saturated Hydrocarbons - Hydrocarbons have a single bond between them. For example - methane (CH4)

Uses of Hydrocarbons -

  • They are the main constituents of petroleum and natural gas.
  • Saturated hydrocarbon propane is used as a fuel.
  • Butane is used in gasoline (antiknocking agent).
