76. Explain sublimation with a suitable example.

Solution

Sublimation:

Sublimation is the conversion of a solid state of matter to a vapour state (without becoming a liquid) and then back to a solid state when the vapors are cooled.

For example, a mixture of iodine and sand, this type of mixture can be separated by a simple physical process called sublimation.

The given example is elaborated in the given below:

  • A funnel is placed over a sand-iodine mixture in a flat basin.
  • To prevent vapour from passing through, the exterior surface of the funnel is covered with water-soaked filter paper, and the open end of the stem is blocked with a piece of paper cotton.
  • In a sand bath, the basin is stored. The sand bath is set on top of a wire mesh on tripod support and then heated using a Bunsen burner.
  • When a violet-colored fume comes into touch with the cooler wall of the funnel, it condenses into a violet powdered material.
  • The heating procedure is repeated until the presence of violet vapour may be detected.
  • Iodine is a sublimable material, thus it sublimes and then condenses into violet powder.
  • Sand, which does not sublime, has been left on the basin.
  • Iodine is scraped from the funnel's wall, and the mixture is thus separated..
