81. With reference to ‘stem cells’, which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. It can be used in therapeutic cloning.
2. It can be used in reproductive cloning.
3. It can be used for creating organs.
4. It can be derived from adult only.
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
Stem cells are mother cells found in all multicellular organisms that have the potential to become any type of cell in the body. They are derived from zygote, blastocyst, adult body etc. Stem cell can be used in therapeutic cloning but they are not used in reproductive cloning. Stem cells can also be used for creating organs. Recently, scientists have for the first time created a functional human liver from stem cells derived from skin and blood and say their success points to a future where much-needed livers and other transplant organs could be made in a laboratory.
Reproductive cloning
It is the production of a genetic duplicate of an existing organism. A human clone would be a genetic copy of an existing person.
Therapeutic cloning
Therapeutic cloning basically has the same procedure as reproductive cloning but with different results and goals. The goal of therapeutic cloning is to study human development and treat disease by harvesting stem cells.
