India having the largest shares about 25% production, about 33% acreage and about 27% consuming of total pulses of the world. The major pulses producing states are Madhya Pradesh (25%), Utter Pradesh (13%), Maharashtra (12%), Rajasthan (11%), Andhra Pradesh (9%) and other states together (30%) during 2012-13. However, the production of pulses has lagged in relation to its demands. The reasons for it are as follows –

1. Lower MSP rates 2.Restrictions on export 3. Productivity issue 4. Lack of irrigation facilities; Most of the pulse grown areas depend on rain etc
