Question

896 ml of a mixture of CO and CO2 weigh 1.28g at ntp. Calculate the volume of co2 in the mixture at ntp.

Open in App
Solution

Volume of one mole gas at NTP = 22.4 litre
total no of moles in 896 ml = 896/22.4 *10^3
= 0.04 moles
Let x and y be the moles of CO and CO2 respectively
thus, x + y = 0.04 .............(i)
Total weight of mixture = 1.28g
28x + 44y = 1.28g ..........(ii)
By solving (i) and (ii) we get y = 0.01
Thus, no of moles of CO2 = 0.01
Volume of CO2 in mixture is = 0.01 * 22.4 litre = 0.224 litre = 224 ml

Thus volume of CO2 in the mixture at ntp is 224 ml.
