Question

90 Out of all gases present in the air, name those which do not support burning?

Open in App
Solution

  • Air is a mixture of different gases. It is composed of: Nitrogen-78.1%, Oxygen-20.9%, Carbon dioxide-0.03%, and some other gases such as hydrogen, helium, argon, etc.

Nitrogen present in the air does not support the process of burning.

  • The powerful triple bonds between the three pairs of electrons shared by two nitrogen atoms (NN)cause unreactive behaviour.
  • Because these bonds have limited radii, breaking them takes more energy.

Thus, Nitrogen does not support burning, instead of that Combustion occurs in the presence.
