Let the original number of people be x and the increased number of people be y.
Then, y = x + 20 . . . . (1)
Total amount = ₹ 9000
Original share of each person = Total amountNumber of people=9000x
Share of each person after increase in the number of people = 9000y

9000x9000y=160

Dividing both sides by 40, we get
225x225y=4 . . . . (2)

Putting y = x + 20 from equation (1) in equation (2) we get,

225x225x+20=4
225+4500225xx(x+20)=44500x(x+20)=44x2+80x=4500x2+20x=1125x2+20x1125=0x2+45x25x1125=0x(x+45)25(x+45)=0(x25)(x+45)=0x=25 or x=45
Since, number of people cannot be negative.
the original number of people is 25.
