Question

92 g mixture of CaCO3 and MgCO3 heated strongly in an open vessel. After complete decomposition of the carbonates it was found that the weight of residue left behind is 48 g. Find the mass of MgCO3 in grams in the mixture.

Solution

CaCO3(s)+MgCO3(s)ΔCaO(s)+MgO(s)+2CO2(g)
Thus on Reaction of 1 mole of CaCO3 & 1 mole of MgCO3, the residue left is 14 mole of CaO & 1 mole of MgO
Molecular wt of CaCO3=100 g MW of MgCO3=84 g
M wt of CaO=56 gMW of MgO=40 g
Thus when a mixture of 184 g is heated, residue weight 96 g
Also, when a mixture of 92 g is heated, residue weight 48 g
A mixture of contains 84 g MgCO3
A mixture of 92 g contains 42 g MgCO3
