98. How do you bring about the following conversions?

(b) ethyne to acetic acid

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Conversion of Ethyne to Acetaldehyde or Ethanal

Ethyne (CHCH) is oxidized in the presence of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and mercuric ions (Hg2+) to form Acetaldehyde or Ethanal (CH3CHO).

The reaction involved is:

CHCHEthyneHg2+H2SO4CH3CHOAcetaldehyde

Step 2: Conversion of Acetaldehyde to Acetic acid

Ethanal is oxidized to Ethanoic acid or acetic acid (CH3COOH) in the presence of Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7).

The reaction involved is:

CH3CHOAcetaldehyde[O]K2Cr2O7CH3COOHAceticAcid
