Question

A 1.50g of an ore containing silver was dissolved and all of the Ag+was converted into 0.24 g of Ag2S .what was the percentage of silver in the ore

Solution

Find moles and mass of Ag in Ag2S:

0.24 g Ag2S / 247.8 g/mol = 9.685X10^-4 mol

(9.685X10^-4 mol Ag2S) X (2 mol Ag/1 mol AgS) X 107.9 g/mol =0.209 g Ag

%Ag in ore = (0.209 g Ag / 1.50 g ore) X 100 =13.9% Ag
