A 100 W light bulb is placed at the centre of a spherical chamber of radius 20 cm. Assume that 60% of the energy supplied to the bulb is converted into light and the surface of the chamber is partially reflecting. Find the absorption coefficient of the chamber, if pressure exerted by the light on the surface of the chamber is 4.4×107 N/m2.

Given,
Power=100 W
Radius=20 cm
Plight=4.4×107 N/m2

60% is converted to light, so
Power supplied to the bulb(P)=60% of 100=60 W

Now, Intensityvelocity=Parea×velocity

Ic=60(4×3.14×0.22)×(3×108)

Ic=4×107 N/m2.

Pressure exerted by light (Plight),

Plight=Ic(1+r)=4.4×107

1+r=1.1r=0.1

absorption coefficient α=1r=10.1=0.9

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.
