Question

A 110m*80m rectangular plot has two crossroads , each 4m wide, running through its middle , one parallel to the lenght and the other parallel to the breadth. Find the total expense involved in cementing the roads at 15 per sq m and layering grass in the remaining part at 1.25 per sq m.

Solution

Total area of the rectangular plot = 110*80 = 8800 square meter.
As the length of the Rectangular plot is 110 m and width of the road is 4 meter.
Hence area of the road parallel to the length is = 110 * 4 = 440 square meter.
similarly
area of the road parallel to the width = 80*4 = 320 square meter.
But as these roads will be crossing each other and common area of these roads = 4*4 =16 square meter
So area of the road inside the rectangular plot = 440+320 - 16 =744 square meter.
Remaining part of the rectangular plot = Total area - Total area covered by roads = 8800 -744= 8056 square meter.

Total Expense = Expense in cementing roads + expense in layering grass
=744*15 + 8056*(1.25) =11160 + 10070 = 21230 INR
