By using Pythagoras theorem,

$(15{)}^2=(12{)}^2+(BC{)}^2$

$\Rightarrow 225=144+(BC{)}^2$

$\Rightarrow (BC{)}^2=225-144$

$\Rightarrow (BC{)}^2=81$

$\Rightarrow BC=\sqrt{81}$

$\Rightarrow BC=9cm$

BC = distance =9cm
