Question

Question 14
A 15m high tower casts a shadow 24m long at a certain time and at the same time, a telephone pole casts a shadow 16m long. Find the height of the telephone pole.

Open in App
Solution

Let BC = 15 m be the tower and the shadow AB is 24 m and CAB=θ.
Again, let EF = h be a telephone pole and the shadow DE = 16m and EDF=θ.
Here, ΔABC and ΔDEF both are right angled triangles.

In ΔABC and ΔDEF,
CAB=EDF=θ
B=E [each 90]
ABCDEF [ by AAA similary criterion]
Then, ABDE=BCEF
2416=15h
h=15×1624=10
Hence, the height of the telephone pole is 10m.
