Question

A 2.00 g. of sample containing Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 loses 0.248 g when heated to 300oC, the temperature at which NaHCO3 decomposes .Find % composition of Na2CO3 in the mixture ?

Solution

We can write a balanced chemical equation as:
2NaHCO3168gNa2CO3+CO244+H2O18

The loss comes due to evolution of CO2 and steam.
62 g loss occurs when the quantity of NaHCO3 is 168 g.
0.248 g loss will occur when the quantity of NaHCO3
=16862×0.248=0.672g

Quantity of Na2CO3 in the sample =(2.00.672)=1.328g

% of Na2CO3=1.3282×100=66.4
