Question

A 20 mL solution of hydrogen peroxide reacts quantitatively with a 20 mL solution of KMnO4 acidified with dilute H2SO4. The same volume of the KMnO4 solution is decolourised by 10 mL of MnSO4 in neutral medium simultaneously forming a dark brown precipitated of hydrated MnO2. The brown precipitate is dissolved in 20 mL of 0.2 M sodium oxalate under boiling condition in the presence of dilute H2SO4. Calculate the volume strength of H2O2.

Solution

2KMnO4+5H2O2+3H2SO42MnSO4+K2SO4+8H2O+5O22KMnO4+3MnSO4+2H2O25MnO2+2H2SO4+K2SO4MnO2+Na2C2O4+2H2SO4MnSO4Na2SO4+2H2O+2H2O+2CO2
Miliequivalents of MnO2=Miliequivalents of Na2C2O4=Miliequivalents of KMnO4=Miliequivalents of H2O2=20×0.2×2=8NH2O2×20=8NH2O2=0.4
Volume strength of H2O2=5.6×NH2O2
=5.6×0.4=2.24
