Question

A 3g sample of Na2CO3.10H2O is heated to a constant mass. How much anhydrous salt remains?

Open in App
Solution

Step-1 - Calculate the molar mass of anhydrous salt

Molecular mass of Na2CO3=2×23+12+3×16=106g

Molecular mass of H2O=1×2+16=18g

Step-2 Calculate the mass fraction

Mass fraction of H2O in Na2CO3= 18106=0.17

or0.83Na2CO3bymass

As given, the sample mass of Na2CO3=3g

After removing water, the mass of Anhydrous salt =3×0.83=2.5g

Hence, 2.5g of anhydrous salt remains.
