Question

A 5 kg rifle fires a 10 g bullet at a velocity of 500 m/s. Find the recoil velocity of the rifle.

Open in App
Solution

Given

  1. Mass of the Bullet, mb=10g=0.01kg.
  2. Mass of the rifle, mr=5kg.
  3. Initial velocity of the gun, ug=0m/s. (The gun is at rest)
  4. Initial velocity of the bullet, ub=0m/s. (The gun has not been fired)
  5. Velocity of the bullet after getting fired, vb=500m/s.

Concept to be used

  1. We will use the concept of conservation of momentum.
  2. Momentum before firing the gun = Momentum after firing the gun
  3. Formula for momentum is given by: p=mv.

Calculation of the mass of the gun

  1. Initial momentum of a system = Final momentum of a system. (According to the law of conservation of momentum).
  2. Initial momentum of the rifle + Initial momentum of the bullet = Final momentum of the rifle + Final momentum of the bullet.
  3. mrur+mbub=mrvr+mbvb.
  4. 5×0+0.01×0=5×(-vr)+0.01×500.
  5. 0=-5vr+5
  6. 5vr=5
  7. vr=55=1m/s.

Hence, the recoil velocity of the rifle is 1 m/s.
