Question

A 5-stage pipeline processor executes 100 instruction and takes 144 cycles for execution because of sonic hazards in pipeline. A new solution is implemented to reduce the hazard's impact by 60%. How many extra cycles the new pipeline takes as compared to the pipeline execution without hazards?

Solution

option (b)

Pipeline cycles without hazards
= (k + n -1).
k = number of stages
n = number of instructions
= 5 + 100 - 1
= 104
Pipeline cycles with hazrads
= 144(given)
Extra cycles because of hazards
= 144 - 104
= 40
Extra cycles in new pipeline
= 40 * 40%
= 16
