For ac C- R circuit,
$V_{S}^{2} = V_{R}^{2} + V_{C}^{2}$
or
$V_{C} = \sqrt{V_{S}^{2} - V_{R}^{2}}$

$= \sqrt{20^{2} - 12^{2}}$

$= \sqrt{400 - 144}$
$= \sqrt{256} = 16 V$
