Question

(a) Account for the following :
(i) o-nitrophenol is more steam volatile than p-nitrophenol.
(ii) t-butyl chloride on heating with sodium methoxide gives 2-methylpropene instead of tbutylmethylether.
(b) Write the reaction involved in the following :
(i) Reimer-Tiemann reaction
(ii) Friedal-Crafts Alkylation of Phenol
(c) Give simple chemical test to distinguish between Ethanol and Phenol

Solution

(a)
(i) There is intra molecular H bond in ortho nitrophenol hence boilling point will be reduced and molecule will be steam volatile while for p- nitrophenol there is no such possibility of intramolecular H bond .

(ii) Sodium methoxide is a strong base hence elimination reaction will be preffered over substitution

(b) (i) Reimer-Tiemann reaction

(ii) Friedel Craft's reaction of phenol

(c) Ethanol will give iodoform test since the alcohol on oxidation will be converted to acetaldehyde which have methyle group while phenol will not give iodoform test
