Question

A,B and C are living organisms. Identify the group to which they belong to on the basis of the following features:

a) A is unicellular, microscopic, eukaryotic, and shows locomotion with the help of pseudopodia.

b) B is unicellular, microscopic, prokaryotic, and has cell wall.

c) C is multicellular, filamentous, eukaryotic, autotrophic and aquatic.

Solution

Features of Protists

  1. All protists are eukaryotic organisms. This means that they have a membrane-enclosed nucleus and other cell organelles.
  2. Most protists are aquatic, others are found in moist and damp environments.
  3. Most are unicellular, however, there are a few multicellular protists such as the giant kelp.
  4. They may be autotrophic or heterotrophic in nature.
  5. Parasitism is also observed in some protists.
  6. Others exhibit symbiosis.

Features of Monera

  1. The Monerans are unicellular organisms.
  2. The DNA is naked and is not bound by a nuclear membrane.
  3. It lacks organelles like mitochondria, lysosomes, plastids, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, centrosome, etc.
  4. They reproduce asexually by binary fission or budding.
  5. The cell wall is rigid and made up of peptidoglycan.
  6. Flagellum serves as the locomotory organ.
  7. These are environmental decomposers
  8. They show different modes of nutrition such as autotrophic, parasitic, heterotrophic, or saprophytic.

Features of Thallophyta

  1. They are usually found in moist or wet places.
  2. This is due to the absence of “true roots” and vascular tissue that is needed to transport water and minerals. Hence they are found in moist or wet places.
  3. They are autotrophic in nature.
  4. Most members of this group manufacture their own food. But a few members like fungi are dependent on other sources of food.,
  5. Reserve food is generally starch.
  6. They have a cell wall composed of cellulose around their cells.
  7. Absence of vascular tissue.
  8. Unlike other plants, xylem and phloem are absent. etc
  9. Sex organs are simple, single-celled, there is no embryo formation after fertilization.

Final Answer

a) Organism A belongs to kingdom Protista.

b) Organism B belongs to kingdom Monera.

c) Organism C belongs to kingdom Plantae; division Thallophyta and class Algae.
