Question

A, B, C, D and E are the various parts of a plant. Part A contains the reproductive organs of the plant. Part A ultimately leads to the formation of part B which contains seeds of the plant. Part C absorbs water and dissolved minerals from the soil and part D makes the food for the plant by the process of photosynthesis. Part E supports the plant and also carries the food prepared by D to all the parts of the plant. What are A, B, C, D and E?

Solution

Parts of a plant:

Part A:

  1. Flowers contain the reproductive organs of the plant.
  2. Stamen is the male part and pistil is the female part of the flower.
  3. Gametes produced from the reproductive parts fertilize to produce fruits.

Part B:

  1. Fruit is the part of the plant which contains the seed.
  2. Ovary of the flower develops into fruit and the ovule develops into seed.
  3. Since the ovule is present inside the ovary of the flower, the seed remains inside the fruit after fertilization and maturation.

Part C:

  1. Root absorbs water and minerals from the soil.
  2. The water is conducted to the other parts of the plant above the soil.

Part D:

  1. Leaves contain the green pigment called chlorophyll which traps the solar energy to perform photosynthesis.
  2. Chlorophyll in the leaf converts carbon dioxide and water to food (glucose) and oxygen.

Part E:

  1. The stem supports the plant parts present above the soil (flowers, fruits, branches and leaves).
  2. Stems also contain the conducting tissues xylem and phloem.
  3. Xylem conducts the water and minerals absorbed by the roots and phloem carries the food (glucose) from leaves to other parts of the plants.

Final Answer: Part A describes flowers, part B describes fruits, part C describes roots, part D describes leaves, part E describes stems.
